Mark E. Haddad
Mark E. Haddad is a partner with Sidley Austin LLP. He leads the Appellate practice for Sidley’s West Coast offices, and is a co-chair of Sidley’s global Appellate practice.
Mark handles appeals in federal and state appellate courts throughout the country, and has briefed numerous cases in the United States Supreme Court. His matters involve the impact of constitutional, statutory, and regulatory provisions on the scope of business and individual liability in such areas as administrative law, antitrust, class actions, constitutional law (due process, equal protection, First Amendment, federalism and preemption), employment law, intellectual property, the life sciences, products liability, and professional responsibility.
Mark is recognized as a leading Appellate lawyer in California in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business 2013, a Life Sciences Star in LMG Life Sciences 2013, a leading lawyer in Supreme Court and Appellate practices in The Legal 500 US (2012, 2013), and in Commercial Litigation in Who’s Who in International Business Law (2011, 2012). Mark regularly discusses recent decisions of the United States Supreme Court at client retreats, at roundtables, and at continuing legal education programs. He has spoken on panels sponsored by the American Bar Association, the Association of Corporate Counsel, the American Society of Association Executives, the Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution, the Rand Corporation, and Town Hall Los Angeles, where he moderated a conversation with Associate Justice Antonin Scalia.
Born in Los Angeles, he attended Harvard School and North Hollywood High School. He earned his A.B. in History, with honors and distinction, from Stanford University. A Rhodes Scholar, he received an M.A., with first class honors in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, from University College, Oxford. He earned his J.D. from the Yale Law School, where we served as Editor-in-Chief of the Yale Law Journal. He also served as a law clerk to the Hon. Louis H. Pollak of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and to Associate Justice William J. Brennan, Jr., of the United States Supreme Court. He joined Sidley’s Washington, DC office in 1987, and moved to Sidley’s Los Angeles office in 1999.
His community involvement includes service on the Boards of the Public Counsel Law Center and Town Hall Los Angeles. His pro bono work has earned awards from the ACLU Foundation for Southern California and from the National Association of Protection and Advocacy Systems, and has included amicus briefs in the United States Supreme Court for Members of Congress, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, MALDEF, LatinoJustice PRLDF, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the State of California, the City of Los Angeles, and many other organizations.
